THE BLUESNEWS FROM THE WORLD OF THE BLUESBLUES FOR THE WEEKEND OF FEBRUARY 10-11, 2018 There’s an article in GQ Magazine about Quincy Jones.  It’s by Chris Heath and it’s titled “Quincy Jones Has A Story About That.” And the 84 year old Quincy has a story about that and more.  In the article, Quincy has stories about Ray Charles, Malcolm X, Elon Musk, Frank Sinatra, Tupac, Prince, Stevie Wonder, you name them, he has a story about them.  He even talks about how good Miles Davis could prepare eggs. He talks about all kinds of music, his upbringing in Chicago, and even his 22 girl friends has has now, and how his daughters laid out some ground rules for his dating…You know, nobody younger than us….At 84…You go big dogg….Great article, and it’s not for the young at heart…Know what I mean….If you’re interested, we have a link to the GQ article on the BluesNew Page at BluesTimeInThecity.com… https://www.gq.com/story/quincy-jones-has-a-story BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM From the American Blues Scene.com site, Matt Marshall did this article titled “Help Petition Google to Make a Muddy Waters Google Doodle.”  The idea is to petition Google to create a Muddy Water Doodle on April 4th, which is Muddy’s birthday….This is a brilliant idea.  Google celebrates music icons this way, and according to the article, and I’m quoting this right from the article,  “a Muddy Waters Google Doodle will help bring cultural recognition and understanding to a music that is still the foundation for almost any popular music today.  Soul, Hip Hop, Rock n Roll, Rap and many more can trace direct roots to the Blues, which even contributes the “B” in R & B.” Stop quote.  If you want to know how you can help, and/or sign the petition, we have a link to the article by Matt on the BluesNews page at BluesTimeinthecity.com….Great idea…. https://www.americanbluesscene.com/google-make-muddy-waters-google-doodle/ BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM  The man that brought the Saxophone Energy to the Blues, Eddie Shaw has made the transition…He was 80 years of age and he made the transition Tuesday, January 30th…. He was Inducted in Blues Hall of fame in 2014… He played with the likes of Magic Sam, Muddy Waters, he was  Howlin Wolf’s band leader from 72 until Wolf made the transition, in 1976,  and, he was his own band leader….That’s all he ever wanted to do was front his own band and that’s exactly what he did from 1976 until the end……In the words of Eddie Shaw, “I Do What I Wanna Do.”  Eddie Shaw traveled the world playing the blues, but it one place he always loved and never forget where came from….The cotton field of Greenville Mississippi…..Our condolences go to the family of the late, Eddie Shaw….. THE BLUESNEWS FROM THE WORLD OF THE BLUESBLUES FOR THE WEEKEND OF APRIL 16-17, 2016   Rolling StonesThe Rollings Stones are releasing their 30th Album and they are going back to the Blues…You heard the late Carey Bell talking earlier in the show about the British Rockers giving the Blues a big boost back in the day….The article is on The American Blues Scene.com site and it reports that their very first gig was in 1962 and it was all covers of Chicago Blues with the songs of Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry. The gig was at the Marquee Club in London…. The upcoming Album doesn’t have a title or release date yet, but they do know it will be “The Blues,” because as they put it, “We Play Blues.” The Rolling Stones got their name from the Muddy Waters tune, Rolling Stone. One of the things that I like about The Stones is that they always give credit to the creators of their sound. They are quick to let you know where and who they got their sound from. There are those that debate the fact that the Stones and a lot of the British Rock Groups and others Stole the blues… To me that is not the case. In most cases, they gave the blues to a new audience, the artists that worked the blues all of their lives found a new revenue stream because of the new blues infusion… Let me know what you think….Tweet me @rojeneblues. The article is on the BluesNews Page at BTIC.com…. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2016/04/rolling-stones-releasing-blues-album/ The National Blues Museum opened on April 2nd.. This museum has been years in the planning, and now, it’s a reality. The festivities were emceed by my buddy Big Llou, the host of Sirius of XM Radio’s Bluesville channel. The exhibitions include paintings of legends of the blues by artist H.C. Porter from his “Blues@Home” collection. The images include such performers as David Honeyboy Edwards, B.B. King, Bobby Rush and many Mississippi Blues Legends….For a look see at the National Blues Museum, we have a link to their site on the BluesNews Page at BluesTimeInTheCity.com… www.nationalbluesmuseum.org And if you’re in the northern Atlanta area, the WBCX Radio area, you can see a play that I’m producing called Beulah Rucker Oliver: My Life~ My Time~My School. The play is about a lady names Mrs. Beulah Rucker Oliver and the school she started on the early 1900’s and ran until 1958. It features Chiara Richardson as Mrs. Beulah Rucker Oliver, and is directed by Ken Johnston. It will take place on Sunday April 24th, with a matinee at 2:30 pm and a performance at 7:00…. For full disclosure here, Mrs. Beulah Rucker was my grandmother, and I am the volunteer director of The Beulah Rucker Museum in Gainesville. THE BLUESNEWS FROM THE WORLD OF THE BLUESBLUES
FOR THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 4-5, 2014

We’ve been getting emails about the International Blues Challege coming up in Memphis in January 2015.  If you go to Bluestimeinthecity.com, go to the BluesNews page, there is a link there to let you know about everything, including lodging, and all the things that are happening there.  From my understanding, this is a sell out every year. The IBC is a competition where Blues Bands from all over the world compete for everything you can imagine for your blues band.  Go to the link, and you find out what you need to know. The Challenge will begin January 20, 2015.

Big doings are going on this weekend in Durham and Carboro North Carolina… The Music Makers Relief Foundation is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary.  The Music Makers Relief Foundation is a different type of organization dealing with blues artists.  A guy by the name of Tim Duffy, along with his wife Denise were always into the blues.  They began visiting the old school blues artists and saw how these artists were living, and what they needed.  They didn’t like what they were seeing.  They started the Music Makers Relief Foundation and began gaining the trust of these artists, working with them, making sure they were getting paid for their performances, getting things they needed like autos, heat, making doctor’s appointments, you name it, they made sure they got it… They began to take musicians all over the world to perform, and made sure they got their just financial due for these performances and the CD’s they recorded.  Since they started 20 years ago, they have partnered with over 300 artists and produced over 150 BCD’s….Blues Compact Discs.  This is one of those organizations that do the right thing.  We have a link on the Blues News page at BluesTimeinthecity.com, and you can get all the information on them, and how they are celebrating their 20th anniversary this weekend in Winston Salem.  The Music Makers foundation is preserving the Soul of America’s Music.

THE BLUESNEWS FROM THE WORLD OF THE BLUESBLUES
FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 24-25, 2014

The funeral for Blues and Soul Singer Bobby Doll Johnson was held last weekend just outside of  Meridan Mississippi. ….. Bobby Doll was a super person and good friend and she had several Southern Soul hits like Rockin The Boat….Cheaters Never Win, and many others…. She was a graduate of West Kemper High School in DeKalb Mississippi…..She was a very young lady that left too soon.  We announced the passing of Funky Larry Jones of Jackson Mississippi a couple of weeks and now, Bobby Doll Johnson…Our condolences go to the families of these super blues friends..…..

We mentioned the documentary on B.B. King a couple of weeks ago…The Life of Riley Documentary… Well, Here are 5 more films that you may be interested in coming out this year…. They Are; 1,  Blue Goose Hollow, the story of Bessie Smith that will be aired on HBO starring Queen Latifah as Bessie Smith… Bessie Smith was known as the Empress of the Blues, and the name Blue Goose Hollow is the town where Bessie was born in Tennessee…. She died in September of 1937 at the age of 43 in a car accident on Highway 61 in Clarksdale Mississippi……..I wonder what kind of car it was… …

2, The Thrill is On, Starring Mykelti Williamson as B.B. King….He was Bubba on Forrest Gump…

3, Get On Up, Starring Chadwick Boseman …The story of Soul Brother Number 1… James Brown….

4, Miles Ahead starring Don Cheadle as Miles Davis…Don is the producer and director of this film, and the guy that wrote Get on Up also wrote his one… His name is Steven Baigelman….and

5, Midnight Rider starring William Hurt and Tyson Ritter as Gregg Alman…This was the film that was filming in Georgia when a train struck a young camera assistant and they stopped filming for a while…. Look for these films to be out this year, and by all means, if you like the blues, go see them...

Did you see the Hologram of Michael Jackson last Sunday Night on the Billboard Awards???  Was that incredible or not….I’m a television producer and I still don’t understand the technology, but I do know it’s incredible….Question… Who would you like to see a Hologram of performing today…… My choices are simple…..Michael Jackson, which I saw last Sunday Night….  Sam Cooke and T-Bone Walker……. That would be really great…. Tweet me @rojeneblues…..

The BluesNews from the world of the BluesBlues March 15-16, 2014

When I was looking at the Cosmos program with Neil DeGrasse Tyson  the other night, I started looking for more space stuff on my trusty I Pad… I found some information about the Voyager Spacecraft  that was launched back on June 16, 1977 and its content.  On board, they placed a message from then President Jimmy Carter,  images, recordings of natural sounds such as wind, thunder, birds, and stuff like that, and they also placed 28 pieces of music on board.  The music was by the likes of Beethoven, Bach, Strovinsky, El Cascelbel, but one stood out more so than the rest.  A recording of Chuck Berry’s Johnny B Goode was also included. Just in case some space brothers and sisters intercepted the Voyager, they would immediately know that we loved some blues down here on earth….Carl Sagan was the chairman of the NASA committee at the time, and guess what the committee rejected…. A nude picture of a man…Space aliens may not have understood nudity….. I guess the thing is billions and billions of miles away by now… A blues rocker by the name of Debra Devi is writing a series of articles called The Language of the Blues.. She will take a word from a from a blues song and define the word in this series of articles.  The word for this week is “Dry.” Her blues definition of Dry, as used in the blues song “dry so long” means to be worn out by poverty to the point where it feels like you’re not going to make it, or “without money.”   They make it sound so respectable ….If you want to see more of this series of articles, there’s a link at BTIC.com… http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2014/03/the-language-of-the-blues-dry-long-so/ And this has absolutely nothing with the blues, but looking at this piece of history from a different perspective, it may have everything to do with the blues… March 17th, 1851, a doctor by the name of Samuel Cartwright who practiced in Mississippi and Louisiana claims he discovered a disease he called “Drapetomania.”  Now he claims Drapetomania was a disease that made African Americans want to run from slavery, and the cure he prescribed to combat this mental disease was whipping and amputation…. You know, there were some crazy and weird people then, just like we have some crazy and weird people now… and to think, these mindsets still exist in some people….…..
