THE BLUESNEWS FROM THE WORLD OF THE BLUESBLUES
FOR THE WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER 3-4, 2018

Nicki Minaj is in the BluesNews….Tracy Chapman, remember, Give me one Reason to stay here back in the 70’s, is suing Nicki Minaj on Tracy’s 2002 single, Baby Can I Hold You.  The reason for the suit is “an uncleared Sample” from Tracy’s song.  That sounds like copyright infringement.  According to what I’ve read, Nicki’s song “Sorry” was given to a New York DJ to listen to.  He put it on the air, and it subsequently  got on the internet.  You know what that means. Tracy Champan is suing for damages, and an order prohibiting Nicki from releasing the song on her upcoming album.

Frank Bey was fed up with the music business because of the way he was treated, or should I say mistreated.  Now, he’s back and a documentary about his return to the stage is in the works.  The title is Ask Me How I Feel.  Frank goes back to his early days in Georgia and other places where he was cheated, passed over, stolen from and done really dirty while trying to kick start his career.  And that was by the brothers.  He says even Soul Brother Number 1 did him wrong.  As a result, he took a few years away from the business, 17 years to be exact, thought about it, and decided to make a comeback.  Now, he’s having fun and performing again.  Very interesting Life he has led so far.  If you want to see a trailer of the documentary, we have a link to it on the BluesNews page at BluesTime In the City.com…..

And one last thing….Do you remember this song???
(Song Poke Salad Annie)

That’s Tony Joe White…..He did the album Black and White by Tony Joe White….This song was on that album….He made the transition on Wednesday Oct 24th in Nashville… He was known as a Swamp Rocker which he combined blues, country and rock and roll.  Most people, including Tina Turner, thought he was a Black Singer.  When she met him, she could not stop laughing.  She finally let him in on the joke.  He recorded over 50 albums.  He wrote the song Rainy Night in Georgia which was a huge hit for Brook Benton way back in the day.  In recent interviews with Tony Joe White, he had to keep explaining that Poke Salad was green leafy type vegetable similar to collard greens that people picked in the woods to cook.  He said often back stage, people would bring him bags of another type of plant which they thought was Poke Salad……He was a great song writer, and many many artists covered his songs.  Tony was 75 years of age…Our condolences go out to the family of Tony Joe White…..
