postheadericon BluesNews from the World of BluesBlues: November 25-26, 2017

It’s been that long….30 years….We just heard from Lil Ed of Lil Ed and The Blues Imperials…They are now celebrating 30 years as Lil Ed and The Blues Imperials.  They celebrated the 30 year mark with a performance at one of the Popular Chicago Blues Clubs, B.L.U.E.S. on November 17th.  The make-up of the band is Ed’s cousin James “Pookie” Young, Mike Garrett on guitar along with Ed, and drummer Kelly Littleton.  These guys have traveled the world bringing the upbeat type of Chicago Blues.  Ed is one of those guys that gets into what he’s doing, making sure no one sits down during his performances.  He’s just that energetic. Ed is the nephew of famed bluesman J.B. Hutto, and if you put two pictures of them side by side, you would have to look twice to make sure who’s who.  I had the pleasure of meeting Ed when they first started 30 years ago, and we’ve been friends ever since.  Every chance I get to interview him, I do it because he always has a new story to tell.  Like the time he jumped off stage and had an accident…..

Lil Ed Audio Bite:

That’s just the type of high energy, fast moving, and acrobatic style show Lil Ed puts on….Congratulations on 30 years for Lil Ed and The Blues Imperials, and their nine BCD releases on Alligator Records, the latest being The Big Sound of Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials, his 3 Blues Music Association Honors, the latest being this year, his five Best Live Performer honors from Living Magazine, and his recognition as the most honored bluesman of his generation. Thirty Years as a Blues Band is pretty much unheard of in the blues, but Lil Ed and The Blues Imperials did it, and are still doing it.
Lucky Peterson has done something very interesting.  He released a BCD that pays tribute to his mentor, the late great Jimmy Smith.  Jimmy was an expert on the B-3 Organ, and the B-3 happens to be Lucky’s favorite instrument.  On the BCD, you can hear The Sermon, The Champ, and many others of the old Blue Note jazz pieces that Jimmy made famous.  Also, Lucky mixed his Blues style in it.  Lucky has a who’s who of talented musicians on the BCD including Kelyn Crapp, a guitarist that teams with lucky on a piece that was made famous by Jimmy and Wes Montgomery for Verve Records.  If you would like to hear a sample, we have a link to the web site on the Blues News Page at…  My all-time favorite album by Jimmy Smith is The Incredible Jimmy Smith….Got My Mojo Workin that was released in December of 1965….He did a fantastic job with that song….Lucky didn’t do Mojo, but he did do Back at the Chicken Shack…..
