THE BLUESNEWS FROM THE WORLD OF THE BLUESBLUES
FOR THE WEEKEND OF APRIL 28-29, 2018

A play opened recently by the name of Tina….The Tina Turner Musical.  It’s about the life and times of the leggy one herself, 78 year old Tina Turner and Tina herself was one that worked for over three years to bring this to fruition.  She was on hand for the opening, which was held in London to rave revues.  It stars Adrienne Warren as Tina and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith as Ike.  Tina says she didn’t really want to do the musical, but she added that she still get cards and letters from people, especially that say Tina Gave them hope.  Gave them courage to move on with their lives after abusive relationships.  It goes through the entire life of Tina including her solo career and culminating with the performance in Rio in front of 180,000 fans.  I still think that’s a record audience to see a live performance.  Doesn’t say if the musical is coming here, But you can look for it soon I’m sure.  If you have never seen Tina Turner perform, especially with the Ikettes, check her out on YouTube and you will be stunned….After the performance of Angela Bassett in the film What’s Love Got to Do with it, I would Love to see someone else attempt to play Tina.  She played Tina to perfection.  Tina…The Tina Turner Musical…Coming here somewhere soon, I would think….

There’s an article on the AmericanBluesScene.com site by Chloe Richardson titled Bobby Rush…He’s Gifted and He’s Blessed.  It was done at The Byron Ba y Blues Festival in Australia, and the first question asked, was funny.  Not on the interviewer’s part, but the answer that Bobby gave.  He talked about his preacher Daddy, and the first song his daddy sang to him as a seven year old.  And no, it was not a gospel song.  And, I didn’t know this….Bobby has released over 377 Albums in his career. That’s a lot of albums.  When asked about him being 84 years of age, he simply says “I’m Gifted.”  Great interview on Bobby Rush and we have a link to it on the BluesNews page at bluestimeinthecity.com…..

And last but not least, it’s fast approaching…The biggest Blues Festival in the world is taking place in Chicago…It’s the Chicago Blues Festival taking place June 8th through the 10th…. This is the 35th year for the Festival, and it’s put on by the Mayors’ Office of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.  The best part of this Festival is that it is absolutely free to the public.  Just walk up and walk in.  There are several stages of performers, and my experiences with this festival is that when one performance ends on one stage, you have about five minutes to get to the next stage so you won’t miss any of the performances.  The Festival takes place June 8th through the 10th…… If you want more information on Everything Chicago Blues Festival, from hotels to parking to who’s performing, which is I suppose is the most important thing, we have a link on the BluesNews page at bluestimeinthecity.com…

And speaking of Blues Festivals, one of the longest running Blues Festivals in the southeast is The Carolina Blues Festival in Greensboro North Carolina.  This is the 32nd year for them and it takes place May 19th and 20th.  This is a partnership of several entities in the Greensboro area, and it includes Food Banks, Literacy programs, Cultural Centers, Libraries and History Museums.  I Love History Museums.  They even have a Blues and Foods Marketplace that is free and open to the public.  Our radio affiliate WNAA The Voice in Greensboro is a part of all of these activities.  The Carolina Blues Festival takes place May 19th and 20th in downtown Greensboro North Carolina….That use to be called the Piedmont Blues Festival….When did they change the name……..If you want to know more about the Festival, we have a link on the BluesNews page at Bluestimeinthecity.com…….
