THE BLUESNEWS FROM THE WORLD OF THE BLUESBLUES FOR THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 28-29, 2017   Just in case you’re making your plans for the blues in the year 2018, coming up in a couple of months, we’re giving you some reminders of what’s going on in 2018. The Blues Foundation will present the International Blues Challenge beginning Tuesday, January 16th 2018… The official opening will take place at the Clayborn Temple, which is a site in Memphis Tennessee where the civil rights struggle was in the forefront in the 1960’s…I understand that Dr. Martin Luther King spoke there frequently.  The Blues Challenge is a blues band competition that invites bands from around the world to compete over world.  The Judges are Blues Professionals that know of traditional blues, rock blues, soul blues, contemporary blues….They cover the entire spectrum of the Blues.  Past winners of this Challenge include Mr. Sipp, Grady Champion, Zac Harmon, Buddy Buster and JW Jones, just to name a few.  The Challenge is always fun because you have bands that range from extremely talented to bands that conjure up the question, What Are You Doing Here?  Even these bands are fun to watch.  The IBC takes place beginning Tuesday, January 16th in Memphis Tennessee…. BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM Also, the Blues Music Awards will take place May 10th, 2018.  These are the awards that’s presented to those blues recordings released between November 1 of 2016 and October 31, 2017 in order to be considered.  It’s also presented by the Blues Foundation and will also take place in Memphis Tennessee.  Of course, the official submission process closed on Tuesday the 24th, but you can attend beginning May 10th of 2018.  We’ve been talking about this for a while, so if you did not get your BCD in the mix, it’s your own fault.  The categories range from Acoustic Album, to Contemporary Blues Album, to Soul Blues Album, and all in between.  The event is always fun…For more information on this and the Blues Challenge, we have a link to their web site on The BluesNews Page at BluesTime In the City.com www.blues.org BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM Aug 2nd 2018, the jus Blues Music Awards will take place in Tunica Mississippi.  They’re doing things for next year that will include the blues audience like voting more for favorite artists, and more artist participation along with working with the youth.  We’re will be talking more about this, but mark your calendars now for August 2nd of 2018. BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM     And one of my favorites is the Chicago Blues Festival.  Presented by the Chicago Cultural Affairs and Special Events Department, this festival started in 1984 and over a three day period, they present on five different stages throughout the day and into the night, blues acts of all kinds from the one person acoustic blues sound to the big band blues sound.  There is never a non-music moment at this festival, and sometimes they will have two acts going on at the same time.  And speaking of time, these acts start dead on time.  All of them.  The best thing about the the Chicago Blues Festival is that it’s absolute free.  The festival takes place in June of 2018, usually the 2nd weekend of June.  We have a link to the Chicago Blues Festival on the BluesNews Page at BluesTimeInTheCity.com There is a lot more going on in 2018 and we’ll keep you abreast as 2018 gets closer. https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/chicago_blues_festival.html/ BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM  WHERE THEY AT WHERE THEY AT:

THE BLUESNEWS FROM THE WORLD OF THE BLUESBLUES FOR THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 21-22, 2017 According to JD Nash, writer for American Scene Magazine web site, the late great Muddy Water’s debut album released April of 1958 will be re-released on November 10th of this year. The Best of Muddy Waters will be in its original form meaning it will be on vinyl, original mono, and the musicians on the album include Willie Dixon, Ernest Big Crawford, Little Walter, Big Walter Horton, Jimmy Rogers, Fred Below, Otis Span, Elgin Evans and Leonard Chess.  Leonard and Phil Chess owned a little upstart record company in 1958 called Chess Records.  This was the album that was the start of the British invasion that launched rockers like The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, John Mayall and many others.  This album was the launch of The Modern Blues…….I mentioned Leonard Chess is listed as one of the musicians on the album…That’s because Leonard did not like how the bass drum sounded on either the song Rollin Stone or She Moves Me, I forgot which one, that he decided he would play the bass drum himself.  If you hear the song, you can definitely tell that it’s Leonard Chess…Terrible, but it’s on the album…November 10th is the date of the release, and Geffin is releasing it, and it will also be available for download and streaming.  This is a first because there was no downloading and streaming in 1958…….We have a link to the article on the BlueNews Page at BluesTimeInTheCity.com… https://www.americanbluesscene.com/2017/10/muddy-waters-debut-album-reissued/ BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM Fans of Blues Guitarist Tinsley Ellis will be glad to know that Tinsley is returning to Alligator Records in Chicago.  He’s working on a new BCD entitled Winning Hand that is set for release January 2018 Congratulations are in order for my man Tinsley…..Tinsley is an Emory University Grad and is based in Atlanta Ga…. BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM BLUESTIMEINTHECITY.COM And this may be a little pre-mature, but beginning November 25th and 26th, the weekend after Thanksgiving, we will begin our all Christmas Blues and Southern Soul programs.  We will play all Christmas Blues and Southern Soul from November 25th and 26th until the weekend of December 23rd and 24th.  So, get your Christmas Requests in now so you can hear your favorite Christmas Blues right here on BluesTime In The City.  You can tweet them to us @rojeneblues…Email them to us at ro@bluestimeinthecity.com, or use the speak pipe icon on the home page of Bluestimeinthecity.com.  This has gotten so popular that it’s hard to play all the Christmas Blues and Southern Soul Songs, but we do our very best to get them in… So make your requests early….
